For the occasion of 's sesquicentennial, Deutsche Grammophon has pooled resources with Decca and drawn on an impressive backlist of superb recordings for this complete 2010 edition. The list of conductors reads like a Who's Who of celebrated maestros, and because,,,,,,,,,,, and were all eminent Mahlerians of the 20th century, the roster is quite impressive, even to seasoned connoisseurs. Normally, listeners have a choice between acquiring a box set of 's symphonies and songs, recorded by one prominent conductor, or picking up albums singly and building a collection on the merits of the performances.

In this instance, DG followed the latter course and chose the finest recordings based on their own strengths, granting in advance that the conductors were especially appropriate for the given works. Considering that there isn't a mediocre performance here, and that the ensembles are all world-class, this is an incredibly tempting offering. In addition to the 10 symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde, 's song cycles are presented in their entirety, and the Piano Quartet movement and the Entr'acte from 's arrangement of 's Die drei Pintos round out the set.

While beginners might want to listen to several different recordings of the symphonies before committing to this compendium, those who are knowledgeable will recognize its value and find it well worth having.

Class B Driver Salary. If this set were not available at super budget price I would not be giving it 5 stars. The documentation consists of little more than a short essay 'A Prophet of Pluralism', which I did not find very informative; lists and tracking of the CDs, and some photos. There are no libretti or commentaries on the individual works, but, for the price that is hardly surprising. The outside of the box does not indicate which of the two Karajan recordings of the 9th Symphony is included; it is the second, from live performances.

It is quite a novel idea to have 11 different conductors for the symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde. Listening to these performances, all of which are good or better in my view, leads me to question the notion of a definitive Mahler interpretation or performance. Granted, the choices for each performance will not please everyone.

I personally feel it's not unreasonable to go with Karajan's live 9th or particularly Solti's 8th, if these conductors are to be represented by just one performance each. The sound quality of the CDs I have heard from this set, thus far, is about the same as in prior releases.
